Common Questions Petrol Garden Shredders

Frequently Asked Questions

Chipping and shredding - what's the difference?

Most petrol garden shredders feature both a chipping and a shredding capability, so they can deal with the different types of waste found in a garden - smaller items such as leaves, plants and hedge cuttings, and tougher woody materials such as tree branches. The two functions operate in distinct ways: shredding involves the crushing of smaller waste material to ensure that it decomposes quickly for use as compost; chipping involves sharp blades cutting up branches to produce wood chippings that can be used as mulch.

Why petrol garden shredders over electric ones?

Electric garden shredders are a clean and adequate solution for basic, low-scale domestic garden shredding. However, petrol garden shredders boast much more power and have the scope to deal with increased amounts of waste that electric shredders may struggle with. The other obvious benefit of petrol garden shredders is that they do not require a mains connection, and can therefore be set up and used in any location without the restriction of a power cable.

Will the noise annoy my neighbours?

Petrol garden shredders and chippers will never be particularly quiet, so it is definitely worth timing when you undertake a spot of shredding! You might offer to shred some of your neighbours waste to compensate for the noise - the benefit of a petrol garden shredder is it should be able to cope with plenty of waste. Having said all that, some manufacturers have developed models with quiet operation, for example the MTD350G Petrol Garden Shredder and also the Viking GB370 Petrol Chipper/Shredder, so these will help you to keep the noise down. And it's worth bearing in mind that a shredder is less likely to annoy neighbours than a bonfire.

Are petrol garden shredders dangerous?

All modern petrol garden shredders are built to exacting safety standards, and many of the models features safety guards, protection nets and mud flaps (to prevent debris flying out of the shredder). However, you should still take precautions such as wearing gloves, goggles and possibly ear defenders when you are operating a petrol garden shredder. If you have long hair, don't forget to tie it back!

What differentiates green and brown garden waste?

Green garden waste is any type of green biodegradable waste products that are found in the garden, such as leaves, hedge cuttings and grass. It is high in nitrogen and once shredded will quickly rot. Brown garden waste is also biodegradable, but refers to waste that is largely carbon based - such as twigs and branches. A combination of the two types of waste is required to produce a good compost, although please note that larger brown waste items (such as branches) will take a long time to decay and are more suitable for producing mulch.
